DESIGNER DU JOUR Michael Kors embodies the Hamptons lifestyle with his impeccable style and sophistication. As he opens his newest store on Main Street, Kors pauses to share a slice of his fabulous life with us.

HAMPTONS: It’s no secret you’re a fan of spending summers in the Hamptons. Describe a typical day for us.
MICHAEL KORS:
I’m usually visiting friends, so it’s lunches, a little shopping, major beach time and a casual dinner with close friends and lots of laughter. I love to shop at my friend John’s store, Homenature in Southampton, and The Palm is the best place for dinner.

H: How does your customer fit the Hamptons lifestyle?
MK:
I live for a day at the beach and escape to one any time I can—which is why I love the Hamptons. It’s a crazy combination of beach attitude mixed with a city vibe. My customer may run from tennis in the morning to lunch at Sant Ambroeus to a gallery party, then to cocktails and dinner at Nick & Toni’s. With such a busy schedule she needs pieces that can evolve with just a change of accessories.

H: Describe your customer.
MK:
She’s a strong, powerful woman. She’s confident but doesn’t fuss with trends. She wants to look great no matter what situation she’s in. She may be a CEO, studio head or a mother, but she knows that when she puts on the right garment she will stand taller, walk with more conviction and feel chic.

H: Chic, indeed. Tell us about the selection at the new Hamptons store.
MK:
I wanted to give my customer the opportunity to get new MK pieces while at the beach. We curated the assortment to complement the lifestyle of the Hamptons: the best bags, sandals, special pieces and jewelry that will work in all different situations.

H: How would you describe this season’s collection?
MK:
The collection is a mash-up of the chicness of 1950s Portofino and the sportiness of 1960s Malibu. It’s bright, graphic and, most of all, optimistic.

H: What’s your go-to look for a day in the Hamptons?
MK:
An adaptation of my uniform in the city: black tee, white jeans, flip-flops and Birdwell beach britches for the beach. I spend my days thinking about what other people are wearing; I don’t want to have to spend time on what I am.

H: What are you currently reading, looking at and listening to?
MK: I’m dying to read Rogues’ Gallery by Michael Gross. As for music, it really depends on my mood: New Order, Prince, Madonna, Adele or Donna Summer. I just saw Every Little Step, which is a fascinating documentary about A Chorus Line, and got a sneak peak at The September Issue, which was spectacular. I loved the revival of West Side Story on Broadway, and I thought that Drew Barrymore was divine in HBO’s Grey Gardens.

H: Where is your favorite place to read, listen and watch?
MK:
My bedroom. I thought, Since I spend half my life in hotels, why not create the most luxurious hotel suite right here?
